We Need You!!! For Grant's 2008 Advent Calendar Promo

Grant's 2008 Advent Calendar Video Countdown.

So you're probably asking yourself, "What's with the Grant's 2008 Advent Calendar Video Countdown." Well here's the story so far...

On Halloween, Nikolai, Caleb, and I released a video marking the start of the countdown to Grant's 2008 Advent Calendar. Grant thought the video was awesome and has since featured it in his Advent Calendar Feed and on YouTube.

We asked Grant if he wanted us to put together another promo video for Thanksgiving and he said he was keen on seeing what we could come up with but doubted that we could top the first video... Sounds like a challenge to us.

So we thought about it and came up with the answer... For the second video promo, we're gonna need video and pictures of even more people watching the countdown clock!

So here's what you do:
1) Pick a random spot on the video and play it back on your computer, iThing, or other video playing device.
2) Video tape or take a picture (or multiple pictures) of yourself staring at, watching, distracted by, engrossed with, etc., the countdown clock. Check out our earlier video for an example.
3) Email the final product to me at dancingwithelephants@gmail.com. Make sure to include names and/or websites in your email so I can make sure you get some credit.
4) Make sure to get your final product to me by Tuesday, Nov. 25th in order to make the Thanksgiving Day release date.

That's basically it.

Now there are some things you should think about when shooting your video or picture. First and foremost, this is a Family Friendly Podcast, so please keep images kid-friendly. The video will most likely end up on YouTube, so make sure what that you shoot is suitable, as far as you are concerned, for public consumption. The original sound will be replaced to feature "Christmas Brought Me You" by Jody Whitesides so don't worry about the audio. We're hoping for a montage of different images, so don't worry too much about pristine quality. I think I can handle most video types, if I have a problem I'll let you know. Gmail can handle files up to 20 MB, so keep that in mind. I think that's pretty much it for the basics, except to add, please feel free to share this with your friends and/or listeners.

Be creative. Use the video playback on your iThing to shoot the scene anywhere. Use your camera phone to take the video or picture. Use your iSight or webcam and a mirror to film yourself, filming yourself, filming yourself, watching the countdown. If your car has a entertainment system that handles video, use that for your setting. If someone can figure out how to get the countdown on a billboard in Times Square, I'd be most impressed. And I know that some of us talk with @_S_A_R_A_H on Twitter and I'm pretty sure her monitors can handle video. Anyway, have fun with the shot.

Now I could name names to encourage certain people that I know to help with this project, but I hesitate doing that mainly because I can't name everyone one and I live in constant fear of offending someone that I may accidently forget. That said, if anyone knows anyone from the cast of A Christmas Story (one of Grant's favorite movies) and you can capture them watching the countdown video, that would be great.

Each year, Grant Baciocco, Doug Price, Jody Whitesides, Greg Baciocco and especially Brandon Baciocco do a lot of hard work to make Grant's Advent Calendar podcast a success. Think of this as away of saying thanks and participating in the fun.

Twittering Long URLs to Tiny URL on your iPhone

This little trick allows you to Twitter websites you may come across while browsing Safari on your iPhone and not having to enter long URLs since it uses Tiny URL. And the best part is it takes only 3 clicks and no copy-paste.

The First thing you'll need is Twitterrific loaded on you iphone. The Free version works for this.

Next, you need to create the following two Javascripts as Bookmarks in Safari on the iPhone.

javascript:void(location.href='http://tiny.cc/?fullurl='+escape(location.href))
Call this one "Convert to TinyURL" or something like that.

javascript:window.location='twitterrific:///post?message='+escape(window.location)
Call this one 'Post with Twitterrific'. And there is no space between '?' and 'message'.

Now all you have to do is when you come across a link that you want to post to Twitter from your iPhone, go to your Bookmarks and click on Convert to TinyURL. This will open a new page in the process creating a TinyURL link to your original page. Click on the TinyURL and this should display the created TinyURL in the Safari address window. Now go to your Bookmarks and click on Post with Twitterrific. This will grab the TinyURL address and dump it in the Twitterrific enter text panel. Finish your post and hit send.

Tina of tinatheartist.com wrote with her recipes for the sensory table:

PLAY DOUGH
1 cup flour
1/2 cup salt
1 cup water
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 Tbsp cream of tartar (optional)
Heat in heavy saucepan. Cook stirring constantly until forms a ball. Turn out onto floured surface and knead until desired consistency. Store in plastic bags or airtight container in refrigerator.

CORNSTARCH PLAYDOUGH
2 lbs baking soda
1 lb cornstarch
1 1/4 cups water
Cook until consistency of mashed potatoes. Can add more water if needed later.

SILLY PUTTY
2 parts white glue
1 part liquid starch
food coloring
Mix until it achieves the 'right' texture. If the silly putty is too sticky then it's too gluey, add more starch. If the silly putty won't stick to itself then it needs more glue. Store in airtight container in fridge.

OOBLIK
Water and cornstarch
Can't remember the proportions, play around with it. It should flow like a liquid but when you press it feel like a solid, you can roll a ball in your palms for example.

DWE: Nikolai's Confession

PLEASE STANDBY FOR THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT.

Hi, my name is Nikolai from Dancing With Elephants. Last week on the Dancing With Elephants Feedbag show for Episode 057, my Dad said that DWithE Episode 058 maybe a little late, coming out either Sunday or Monday evening. Well as you can probably surmise, this was not the case. You see, my brother, Caleb, and I were very, very bad this weekend.

Believing that we live under what can best be described as totalitarian rule, we sought to bring our grievances before our oppressors, namely Mommy and Daddy. After a brief exchange of pleasantries, a heated debate ensued culminating in a statement put forth by both of them that, "Nightly visits to Chuck E. Cheese is not a guarantee under the Human Rights Doctrine put forth by the United Nations Charter."

Faced with the fact that we were likely not to receive any gratification from our demands, we staged a mutiny. The battle was messy and for a while, we held the upper hand, until Caleb cracked under the pressure and thirst drove him to ask Mommy for a glass of chocolate milk. Met with dissension in our ranks, our cause became hopeless.

Therefore, as an act of attrition I have take pen to paper and with heavy heart I explain to you, our valued listeners, the reason for the delay in the posting of DWithE Episode 058. My brother and I are truly sorry.

I also ask that you rest easy in the knowledge that DWithE Episode 058 will come out on May 20, 2007 along with the names of the winners of the Let Them Hear You Contest. This will be followed later in the week by the Listener Feedbag Show for Episode 058.

On the path that we walk in life, one is likely to encounter bumps in the road. It is my hope that this one didn't jostle you too much.

I make this confession of my own free will and without duress or coercion being put on me.

Want to enter the Let Them Hear You Contest? Then send the name of the podcast you reviewed, a copy of your review, the podcast directory where you posted your review, and your user name if applicable to dwecontest@gmail.com. Have fun and Good Luck!

The following are the ground rules for the Let Them Hear You Contest:

1. Enter as many times as you like.

2. Each review must be 20 words or more and end with "R U Listening?"

3. No copy and pasting the same review for multiple shows.

4. No writing multiple reviews for the same show in multiple podcasting directories.

5. Since this is our contest, we have the final say on what we consider to be a legitimate review. Needless to say, "This podcast is really, really, really, really, really, really, really good." will not make the cut.

6. The podcast directory has to be recognized as a legitimate directory such as iTunes, Podcast Alley, or Podcast Pickle.

7. Each legitimate review counts as one entry in the drawing.

Okay, we're are up to Day 25. Dennis Gray of 101 Uses For Baby Wipes offered his opinion that in the Day 19 photo, the middle plant, Plant C, appears to be thriving more than the others. I'll agree that it appears to be taller than the other as its stems are long an lanky. However, the other plants appear fuller, which is something that isn't easily discernible in a 2D photo. That said, none of the plants appear to be dying. Anyway, Dennis's observation has been logged. Do you have an comment? Please let us know. In the meantime, please stay tuned.

So here are the plants (A-E) on Day 1. Every 3 days they are receiving 50 ml of their respective experimental water. Because this is a blind study we don't know which plant is getting which water. Episode 011: Father's Day REPOST

Hi All,

Brief note, Libsyn had some trouble on Saturday and when I uploaded the Father's Day Episode (011) it truncated the file name and since the file name for the Mother's Day Episode and the Father's Day Episode are pretty much the same except for the first two letters, which were part of the truncation, well the files got swapped. I tried to correct it and that just started a whole host of other problems. So long story short, this is a reposting of Episode 011: Father's Day. Episode 006: Mother's Day has been deleted and I'm trying to upload it again, but as I mentioned before, Libsyn is having server problems this weekend. I should have everything up to normal soon.

Hi All, this is a reposting of Episode 001, a non-enchanced version (mp3) for the masses. I originally podcasted Episode 001 as an enchanced version to include the pictures of Nik's magic trick (it was only Episode 001 after all and I was being goofy). Future episodes will be in the mp3 format.

Oh yeah, I will also attempt to get a mixer before the next episode, so that the vocal audio is a little more pleasant, so stay tuned.

So here it is, the first episode of Dancing With Elephants and all the excuses that come with it. Today we're pretty much introduced to the characters involved: Greg, your slightly humble host. Nikolai, age 4, who decided to test the waters of a visual magic trick on an audio podcast. And finally, Tonya, Greg's wife who after a day of dealing with the kids, is willing to put up with his childish rant.
